The battle among mobile applications platforms is well and truly on. According to an infographic released by Quixey, Apple is still the leader among mobile platforms and now has a commanding lead of 54.7%, followed by Android with 35.5%. The applications market is a mix bunch of free and paid apps, and developers and mobile platform owners are constantly jostling for position for the spoils.
And these spoils are something else. According to Quixey, there is a hefty chunk of apps that cost between $1 and $50—around 32.6%. Another 22% of apps cost up to $0.99 (starting at free of course). All in all, a total of 54% of applications cost users a hefty sum, by apps pricing standards and these are the spoils that companies like Apple and Google are fighting so doggedly over.
There is another side to the story however, and that is the constant influx of new Apps to the markets. Presently there are over 1 million active applications across all the major mobile platforms. Apple seems to manage its apps well and discontinues and deletes Apps that causing more trouble than they are worth. Google isn’t half bad either, but it still struggles to vet as good as Apple.
For now Apple has the lead, let us see how long it can keep it.
