Color.com Domain Was Acquired For $350,000

In domain buying and selling circles one-word domain names are gold. It therefore comes as no surprise that the domain color.com was acquired for the tidy sum of $350,000. What’s perhaps interesting is the journey of the domain itself.

Back in December 2010, the domain was sold through GoDaddy.com to a buyer who was at the time looking to launch a venture funded by VCs. At the time of the auction many were peeking in, eagerly watching to see how much the domain would fetch. The buyer turned out to be a technology firm who was at the time preparing to launch a mobile photo sharing app called—you guessed it—Color.

Since then of course the firm managed to get their hands on the domain and are now in the early stages of raising over $41 million from Venture Capital firms in order to fund greater development with the App. So far the Color website is seeing a fairly steady stream of traffic and currently stands at 84,208 Alexa ranking. Nothing incredible for sure, but enough to suggest that when the funding does come on-stream, the site will increase in popularity.

Incidentally, the firm who bought the domain color.com were not lost on the fact that color.com would be a good buy too, and reports are that they splashed out another $150,000 to acquire the additional domain color.com.
