Tumblr Was Down For 42.1 Hours In 2011

It looks like all that traffic and activity on Tumblr is causing it to have ‘shorts’ in the circuitry. A new report from social blog monitoring site, Pingdom, shows that Tumblr had the most downtime in 2011 for social blog platforms in its class. Tumblr was down a total of 42.1 hours in 2011, and although this is an improvement on the downtime recorded in 2010, Tumblr needs to step up to the plate and keep things going for longer.

In an age of 99.99% uptime, Tumblr fails miserably to show that its platform is a part of the times. In 2010 Tumblr recorded its single longest downtime with 24 hours, and although the single longest period this year is only 3 hours, users and potential investors alike can’t be happy.
So what is causing all these downtime troubles for Tumblr? Experts cite the rate of growth the platform has enjoyed in the last few years. Tumblr now has a staggering 37 million blogs on the platform—an increase upon the 11 million blogs it had just 12 months ago. This level of growth almost suggests that the developers at Tumblr didn’t expect it, and as such, didn’t adapt the architecture quick enough. God speed to them though, I like Tumblr.
