EAM.com Domain Name Sells For $15,000

There was a time when you couldn’t join a domain sales conversation about a three-letter domain unless you had at least $50,000 to spend. But these days these once coveted domains are changing hands for some relatively small amounts.

One example is the recent sale of EAM.com which went for a paltry $15,000 at Godaddy Auctions. The domain which apparently is 14 years old attracted over 4seven bids from 9 bidders. But despite the low sales figure, some observers are calling the sale a ‘good sale’. The common justification for passing such a judgment is that online expired auction sales, this one was actually a live auction, run by the seller and therefore uninfluenced by Godaddy.

Now, I am not so sure that much can be written home about a 15K sale on a three-letter domain that is ‘aged’ as they say in wine parlance. The fact is that a domain of this caliber should have gone for more. Perhaps the marketplace itself can be blamed for the low sales; although the bid total suggests otherwise. The only other justification I can see that the Godaddy aftermarket has a tolerance level that is unlike Sedo or Afternic—perhaps buyers in that marketplace have a limit on how much they like to spend as a matter of culture.

We’ll perhaps never know, but for now I am sure both buyer and seller are happy.

What say you? Should a three-letter domain go for more than 15K? Share your thoughts below.
