RunKeeper Health App Gets $10 Million In Funding

The Apps market is very competitive, so when one vertical doesn’t work too well, it is sometimes helpful to make a switch. This is the case with Runkeeper, an App that was designed to help people keep tabs on their fitness through the integration of daily activities (exercise included) and an online measurement and assessment of those activities. For a time, Runkeeper had some success, commanding a sizeable bunch of users. Today though, it has struggled to maintain that spark that garnered the attention of users.

In an attempt to keep the company and the Apps it makes relevant, Runkeeper has moved away from fitness to Apps that help track and monitor personal health among other applications. Acting as a conduit for data sharing, Runkeeper is now seeking to develop this new model and has secured over $10 million from VCs to help flesh out the details and vision.

Leading the pack of VCs is Spark Capital, one of the top VCs in the ‘Valley’. Joining Spark Capital are lesser known VCs, OATV and Revolution Ventures. The $10 million is expected to go directly into rebranding Runkeeper and building the relationships with both users and other developers in the health monitoring Apps market.

Given the growth in mobile use and the projected growth in the Apps market in general, companies like Runkeeper can experiment with verticals with relative safety and should be fine.
