An errant comment on Facebook has been known in these times to cost people their jobs, so it comes as no surprise that the hand that taketh away, also giveth. A new study has revealed that a whopping 89% of companies will use social media as tool for recruiting staff.

This is very interesting stuff, as it means the traditional route of putting an ad in the paper is going the way of the Dodo bird. The study which was conducted by Jobvite found also that 55% of US companies would increase their recruiting budgets, corporate site presence and social media activity in order to recruit the best of the best to fill positions. Facebook and Twitter enjoys the bulk of the action with 55% and 47% respectively.
Interestingly, the biggest professional social network, Linkedin, didn’t figure as much in the uptake for recruitment, a staggering stat considering that LinkedIn’s raison d’etre is to facilitate the recruitment of professionals.
But there’s also an interesting dynamic that emerges from this growing trend and it’s the pool of people that is available for selection. Naturally, by using social media, there will be a greater pool if people and indeed the study did find that 77% of the respondents expect increase competition among candidates.
Form these stats it is clear therefore, that social media whilst making it easier for companies to fill vacancies, at the same time makes it tougher to secure work.
