The last few months have seen a few high profile cases of hackings into high security government and official databases and it seems we might have just witnessed another one.
According to reports, a notorious hacker group called Team Poison has hacked into the United Nations and compromised thousands of email logins and passwords. Of course, in keeping with the tradition of claiming responsibility, Team Poison has gone as far as to issue a reason for the hacking. According to a release, the hacking of the website of the United Nations Development Programme, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, UNICEF and the World Health Organization, is to protest the “the bureaucratic head of NATO used to legitimize the Barbarism of Capitalist elite.”The United Nations hasn’t issued any official response to the attack but I am sure the perpetrators will be sought by the authorities. But will they catch them? Team Poison is known to be very shadowy and has only loose ties with other prominent hacker collectives. The group for instance launched an all-out attack on rival hacking group LulzSec, exposing many of LulzSec’s members a few months ago.
This recent hacking—especially of such an important organization—will once again put the censorship and access to the internet under the microscope.
