The idea that companies should give something back to society is not new, but in recent times the drive to make that ‘giving back’ more pronounced has been gathering steam. One of the entrepreneurs behind the recent push is Co-Founder and former CEO of SimpleGeo, Matt Galligan.
Mr Galligan has been very vocal about the need for companies to contribute to the social good and has found allies in other investors like Shervin Pishevar. Since the launch of their ‘1% of Nothing project’, the idea has taken root among several tech companies and the drive for building up a charitable pool of funds sourced from the act of corporate benevolence seems effective so far.
One of the early contributors is Joshua Strebel, Founder and CEO of Page.ly. Strebel has handed over the 1% being asked for by the project and is happy that he’ll be contributing to social good. Of course, Page.ly isn’t a Google.com and so any real inroads into building the social fund as it were, will need the effective targeting of larger tech companies.
It will be very interesting indeed to see who else joins the 1% of Nothing bandwagon. Corporate profits are high in the big tech sectors, IPOs are rolling out every other week almost, so lets see who steps up to the plate.
