Twitter is one of the many popular social networking sites of today’s time. It allows people to connect with friends, family, coworkers, etc as well as keep up with their favorite comedians, celebrities, companies, and various businesses. Twitter has really taken off in the past year and is a great place not just for personal connections but also for businesses to attract more customers.

For example, the popular food chain, Wendy’s has a Twitter account which it uses to advertise to customers as well as bring in more business. It recently acquired 33,000 new Twitter followers in just a single month! This is impressive since many businesses have not been so successful in such a short amount of time. Here is the reason and method behind their success:
The effort, which promotes a new mid-size burger called the W, revolved around a game show on Twitter using the handle @GirlBehindSix. (The six referred to the open slot on Wendy’s menu, which would be filled by the new burger.) Although Wendy’s bought a Promoted Trend for one day on Twitter to publicize the account, the only other paid promotion was an ad that ran a few places on Sixth Avenue in New York and on the 6 subway line that described @GirlBehindSix as a “140-character game show.”
This was launched on October 6th of this year, without being directly tied to the fast food chain itself. The game show launched on Halloween and awarded $1000 prizes to six followers who retweeted the rules of the contest to their followers. There were various other challenges for followers that allowed them to win various other prizes as well.
“The goal was to surprise and delight and give [consumers] a picture of Wendy’s they hadn’t seen before.” says Flamberg, who was behind the promotions for Wendy’s going on on Twitter.
Other businesses should follow Wendy’s lead in order to gain more customers and increase their business.
