42 Billion Videos Were Watched By Americans Last Month

There’s definitely something about online videos, Americans and the month of October. This surely has to be the conclusion drawn from a recent data report compiled by ComScore.

According to ComScore, over 184 million viewers combined to view a staggering 42 billion videos for the month of October—making that month the busiest month for online videos ever! Broken down by hours, that’s solid 21 hours viewing time per viewer or just over 1268 minutes per viewer. These numbers of course are staggering by any count and show the reach that online videos have in 2011.

Leading the viewership count is of course YouTube, the webs busiest and largest video sharing site. YouTube and other Google sites together accounted for more than half the videos watched. The second nearest competitor was VEVO who accounted for 827 million videos—a flash in the pan compared to the over 21 billion videos gobbled up by the Google machine.

One wonders too what will happen to the competition when YouTube unleashes its premium channels in the coming months. With big names like Ashton Kutcher and Shaq set to post content, the monthly video views will almost certainly go through the roof.
