Few thought a few years ago that online working could become a sustainable reality, but since sites like Elance and oDesk came on stream, the sentiment has changed dramatically. Today work platforms like oDesk that brings together contractors and product and service buyers help to define the future of what work will look like. oDesk in particular is reporting strong growth and revenue figures.
According to a recent report released by oDesk, contractors using its platform to secure work, made over $22.3 million in profits in October alone—a jump of 90% on the figures from last year (2010). When you look at the number of hours worked by these contractors, it’s not difficult to see why oDesk is doing so well. According to its own report, contractors worked a total of 2.1 million hours so far this year. The figure last year was 1 million hours worked for the entire year so clearly oDesk is doing something right.
In a wider sense, oDesk’s success is an indicator of the trajectory of the online job market and the company is predicting that by the end of 2012, the value of such a job market will be around $1 billion. This naturally will mean a greater slice of the cake for sites like oDesk, but more importantly, it will mean more job opportunities for people looking for work.
