TechCrunch is reporting that the domain Local.ly has just been sold for $100,000 but no sooner than the story broke, there’s been criticism. And what’s amazing is that much of the criticism is due to the high purchase price and the fact the domain sale broke the record for the highest recorded sale for a .LY.
So what’s the problem? At the heart of the matter it seems, is a belief that .LY domains shouldn’t attract the level of value that they do. It’s important to keeping mind when assessing this sale, and the criticism that the most popular .LY domain is Bit.ly and many feel that is as good as it gets. But many feel the criticism is due in large part to the fact that .LY is the TLD for Libya. The recent happenings in the country have left investors in the .LY extension worried that the whole thing could be undermined unless the country returns normalcy pretty quickly.
But that is perhaps just alarmist thinking. Libya after all has been ‘liberated’ and where many are concerned; things will only get better from here on in. TechCrunch hasn’t reported the name of the buyer, but whoever that person or enterprise is, they certainly feel confident in the country of Libya and the TLD itself.
Do you think at $100,000 Local.ly is overpriced? Share your thoughts below.
