Amazon may be struggling to keep its favorable tax provisions alive in the US, but over in India things are a lot smoother. The retail giant already has a 200,000 square feet complex in Andhra Pradesh (AP). The site currently employs around 3300 people and recently Amazon announced that it is planning an expansion of the facility.
The announcement of the planned expansion was made by the AP government and the development is expected to be around $100 million. When the expansion is complete, the facilities at Hyderabad are expected to house another 3000 employees, making this one of Amazons largest operations outside of the US.
Amazon joins Facebook who this year marked the first successful year of operations in Hyderabad. The area has seen interest from a plethora of tech companies, many of whom are now looking to slash operating costs and tax obligations as the US government steps up the pressure on tech companies to pay more taxes in line with revenue and earnings.
But tax issues and operating costs aside, Amazon seems to have a much larger vision for its operations in India. The company is reportedly planning to launch an online retail version in India during the first quarter of 2012. This of course is great news for India who now joins fully developed countries like the UK and Germany who already have their own versions of Amazon.
Is Amazon’s expansion a sign that India is now fully equipped and ready to accommodate expansion by the world’s biggest tech companies? Share your thoughts below.
