A Text Link Ad On Google’s Home Page Costs $5 Million Per Day

It’s no secret that advertising on Google’s Adwords platform is expensive, but few would be able to guess just how expensive an ad on Google’s home page would be. But Gene Munster, research analyst at Piper Jaffray, has taken the trouble to crunch the numbers for those of us who are completely in the dark.

According to Mr Munster, the CPM cost to run an ad exclusively on Google’s home page would cost between $15 and $20. In real-value terms, a totals day’s ad spend would be around $4 million to $5 million for the day. The observation was made after several people began talking about the one line ad blurb that Google ran last Wednesday promoting the Nexus One mobile phone. The ad, Mr Munster is pointing out, is not the first to grab front page status. Google did the same thing for the Chrome web browser as well as the Motorola Droid phone when they both came out.

Of course, many would question whether a spot on Google’s front page is worth that much, but such a question would fly in the face of the facts. Google owns over 60% of the search market and in any one day, gets over 147 million unique visitors to its home page. When you consider those stats, $5 million a day is well worth it.
